If you qualify for VA health care, you can get high-quality mental health services as part of your benefits. You may also be able to get care for certain mental health problems even if you don't have VA health care.
The Manchester VA offers individual, goal oriented psychotherapy for Veterans in our care. Our staff consist of Clinical Social Workers, Psychologists and an LMFT who are trained in a wide variety of treatment modalities. Clinicians on staff are certified in several Evidence Based Psychotherapies such as:
- Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
- Cognitive Processing Therapy for Chronic Pain
- Dialectical Behavioral therapy
- Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE)
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression (CBT-D)
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Pain
- Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Depression (ACT)
- Motivational Interviewing (MI)
- Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET)
We have Individual Therapists located at the Manchester VA, as well as Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in Somersworth, Portsmouth, Tilton, and Conway New Hampshire. We also have evening and Saturday appointment times available at the Manchester VAMC.
Marriage and Family Therapy
We currently have a licensed LMFT and Clinical Psychologist who provide marriage and Family Therapy to Veterans and their loved ones. Our lead marriage and Family therapist is also trained in the evidence based treatment Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy (IBCT)
Our groups have expanded greatly over the last few years, and will continue to expand to meet the needs of our Veterans. We have several group offerings such as Better Sleep CBT, Women’s Wellness, Anger Management, Stress Reduction, Vietnam Veterans Group, STAIR, CBT for Depression, Managing Anxiety, Seeking Safety, Pain Management, Mindfulness, DBT, PTSD Skills, Managing Chronic Illness, Recovery Dialogues and Peer Support Group. Medication Evaluation and Management:
We have psychiatrists, Nurse Practitioners and a Psycho-pharmacologist on staff for evaluation and management of Veteran’s who require medication to treat their mental health condition.
Medication management is available at the Manchester VA, as well as Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in Somersworth, Portsmouth, Tilton, and Conway New Hampshire. We also have Saturday appointment times available at the Manchester VAMC.
Substance Use Disorder Treatment:
The Substance Use Disorders Program provides assessment and treatment for individuals concerned about their use of alcohol or other substances. We offer a variety of evidence-informed treatments including: individual and group therapy to address substance use, as well as specialized treatment for those with co-occurring disorders, including evidence-based treatment for PTSD, BPD and mood disorders.
The SUD Program also offered medication assessment and Medication Assisted Treatment for substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders, including a Suboxone Program for those struggling with Opioid Use Disorder.
In addition to the outpatient services available at the Manchester VA, staff can assist veterans in identifying options for higher levels of care such as: Intensive Outpatient Programs, detoxification services, inpatient rehabilitation and residential programs at other VISN 1VA’s or in the community.
Primary Care Mental Health Integration is located in the primary Care clinic. Providers work with Primary Care staff to treat Veterans in primary care setting through curbside consultation and evaluation. Services include walk-in mental health evaluation and assessment for Veterans new to Mental Health, brief medication evaluation/management and brief therapy.
Suicide Prevention Program
Provides care management to Veterans who have been assessed to be at high risk for suicide.
Military Sexual Trauma Program
We provide individual and group counseling for male and female Veterans who are survivors of MST. Our MST Coordinator can help Veteran’s access needed physical and mental health treatment related to Military Sexual Trauma.
Health Care for Homeless Veterans Program
Our Homeless staff are available to assist Veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Services available are: Homeless Outreach and Case Management, Grant and Per Diem Transitional Housing Veterans Assisted Supported Housing , Veteran’s Justice Outreach and Reentry Services. The homeless team offers a daily walk in clinic M-F 1pm-2pm.
Peer Support Specialists
In line with our Recovery Model approach to Mental Health treatment, the VAMC has Peer Support Specialists who are available to support Veteran’s along their journey of recovery.
Therapeutic and Supported Employment Services
Assists eligible Veterans to overcome barriers to employment. Provides guidance in developing job search techniques and helps to address barriers to employment.
