Therapeutic and Supported Employment

What is Therapeutic and Supported Employment Service?

The mission of the Therapeutic and Supported Employment Service Program is to assist Veterans to overcome barriers to employment. Vocational assistance is provided to any veteran who requires guidance in developing job search techniques, resume development or any issue related to employment. A Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist will determine which of the available programs is best suited for the Veteran.

Supported Employment is a program designed primarily to help Veterans diagnosed with Serious Mental Illness (SMI), find and maintain competitive employment in their local community. Veterans in this program are assigned to a Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist who can dedicate a significant amount of one-on-one time in the pursuit of employment.

Transitional Work is a program designed to provide employment assistance and work opportunities. Veterans may be financially compensated and provided jobs within the VA medical facility or the local community.

Homeless Veteran Supported Employment is a therapeutic work program for homeless veterans, with monetary incentives derived from direct employment in the community and paid by the employer. Ongoing supports by vocational rehabilitation specialists are provided in a number of areas including assistance with job skill analysis, resume development, marketing techniques, and may also include referral to other agencies and services as may be required by the veteran.

How do I access Therapeutic and Supported Employment Service?

Veterans interested in assistance from TSES programs should request a consult to TSES from their Mental Health Provider at the Manchester VAMC. The provider will ensure work readiness and issue a clearance for work.

A Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist will then contact the veteran and develop a plan of care coordinating with other health care providers designed to assist the veteran in overcoming existing barriers to employment.

Employers may also contact the TSES program directly for opportunities to hire a qualified Veteran.

Program Goals include improving the following: employment, financial responsibility, self-esteem, social interaction, and quality of life.
